Top 10 Road Trips Revealed
UK motorists have revealed a selection of their favourite routes in the UK, following the results of a National Geographic survey. A survey of 2,000 drivers, was commissioned by National Geographic to launch season 11 of Car S.O.S, on Thursday 9th March 2023. The top 10 feature routes across England, Scotland and Wales, celebrating Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Parks, and stunning scenery.
Tim Shaw, presenter of the show, said: “The research has highlighted some of the most spectacular locations to drive in the UK, celebrating some of the roads we should all enjoy at some point in our lives.
The top 10 best roads (routes) to drive in the UK are:
The North Coast 500 route starting from Inverness in Northern Scotland
Cheddar Gorge through the Mendip Hills B3135
Snake Pass (A57) in the Peak District
Kendal to Keswick in the Lake District, A591
Snowdonia’s Llanberis Pass, in Wales – A4086
St Ives to St Just in Cornwall, B3306
Best of the Moors (A169 and A170) in Yorkshire
The Cotswolds – Cheltenham to Stratford
Cat and Fiddle route (A53 then A54 followed by the A537) in the Peak District
The Black Mountain Pass A4069 in the Brecon Beacons, Wales
Annah Todman, director of the road trip planner membership website, UncoverBritain.com, says: “I am thrilled to see that every route in the top 10 is featured in a corresponding road trip, in our library of road trip plans, meaning we are right on the mark with making sure road trippers plan their perfect road trip and make the best memories. They are all worthy winners.”
With the famed Scotland’s North Coast 500 bagging the top spot, Tim Shaw, presenter of the show, said: “The North Coast certainly feels a worthy winner, with its absolutely spectacular scenery”. The NC500 is a 500-mile circular route, starting at Inverness and carries on up along the coastline to John O’Groats, and of course follows the north coast as well as part of the west coast before travelling back cross country. The North Coast of Scotland road trip covers this coastal route within its annual membership.
There are seven English road trips featuring in the top 10 list, with Cheddar Gorge through the Mendip Hills, B3135, in Somerset, taking second place. This amazing route through the heart of the Gorge is part of the Mendips and North Somerset road trip, which also meanders through pretty villages and market towns as well as some stunning coast.
The Peak District bags two top spots, with Snake Pass in the Peak District National Park with its steep gradients and the twisting road gets twisty in places, in third place. Here, you might end up travelling with your foot on the break for long stretches, especially if you travel from east to west. The “Cat and Fiddle route” (A53 then A54, followed by the A537) in the Peak District has been named in ninth place. Both of these routes are found in the Peak District road trip.
Other winners from northern England, include A591 road from Kendal to Keswick, in the Lake District, in fourth place, and A169 and A170 as the “Best of the Moors” in Yorkshire in seventh place. The A591 can be taken in within the Literary Lake District road trip, whereas the “Best of the Moors” scenic route along the A169 and A170, can be incorporated into the York & North York Moors road trip.
Heading to southern England, the Cotswolds route from Cheltenham to Stratford hits the eighth spot. Narrowing down the Cotswolds’ favourite route must have been hard, as there are so many to choose from. The Uncover Britain “Classic Cotswolds road trip” has been broken down into mini-routes to cover as many beautiful routes as possible.
The remaining southern route, Cornwall – along the B3306 from St Ives to St Just, is voted the sixth favourite. This is another tricky route to narrow down to a favourite, given how spectacular the Cornwall coast is. You can follow the coast with this Cornwall Coast road trip.
Two fantastic routes in Wales, have also made it into the top 10 of favourite routes. This includes the renowned Black Mountain Pass - A4069 - in the Brecon Beacons. If you’re following the Wales Way: Cambrian Way, you will need to de-tour over the westerly part of the Brecon Beacons to ensure you drive this exciting weaving road, otherwise, it’s bound to be part of your South Wales route.
In fifth place is Snowdonia's Llanberis Pass, A4086 which can be reached as part of the Cambrian Way route, following the A5 east from Betws-y-Coed towards Capel Curig, and it can also be reached from Caernarfon if you’re following the North Wales Way road trip route, or A5 southerly from Bathesda.
With so much choice around the country, it could be hard to know which to head to first. You might meticulously plan them all in each of your next road trip or wing it and take them as they come. Interestingly, research also said that 47% believed themselves to be an organised road tripper, planning details in advance seen as important, whereas 18% preferred to be spontaneous.
Either way, a subscription an individual road trip or a region of road trips will suit both, to access for planning on the computer at home, as well as accessing on your mobile phone on the road.
