Bases & Overnight Stays — Cumbria Coast

This is not a compact loop. At around 173 miles, the Cumbria coast stretches across very different landscapes — tidal estuaries, maritime towns, remote shoreline and the Roman frontier.

Driving distances are manageable, but tides, ferry crossings, detours and slower coastal roads naturally shape the pace.

Choose whether you prefer a structured base approach or a gradual journey along the coastline.

What works best?

Balance: 3–4 bases • Simplicity: 2 bases • Journey: Night-by-night

Most balanced

3–4 regional bases

Follows the natural geography of the coast.

Grange / Cartmel / Ulverston → Barrow / Walney → Ravenglass / St Bees → Carlisle
Estuaries → islands → cliffs → Roman frontier • Minimal backtracking • Clear progression
Most simple

Two bases

Best for a 6–7 day trip with fewer moves.

South Cumbria → West Coast / Carlisle
Covers full route • Some longer day drives • Easy structure
More immersive

Three bases

A slower version of the full journey.

Morecambe Bay → Furness Peninsula → West Coast
Strong contrast • Good pacing • Time to explore each section
Most immersive

Night-by-night

A classic coastal progression.

Grange → Ulverston → Barrow → Ravenglass → St Bees → Whitehaven → Carlisle
No backtracking • Feels like a true journey • Each stop reflects a landscape shift

Campervans & Motorhomes

This route works best when travelled gradually, with a mix of coastal roads, estuary crossings and quieter inland stretches.
