Overnight Stays in the Cotswolds

This Cotswolds road trip is built around a central Grand North–South Spine, running from Chipping Campden to Castle Combe, with a series of optional loops branching off along the way.

Unlike more remote routes, distances here are shorter and more flexible — meaning you can travel night-by-night or stay in one or two carefully chosen bases and explore from there.

The best approach depends on how much time you have and whether you prefer a flowing journey or a more relaxed, hub-based trip.

Most immersive

Night-by-night flow

Follow the Grand Spine naturally from north to south (or reverse).

Typical route

Chipping Campden → Broadway / Snowshill → Bourton-on-the-Water → Cirencester → Tetbury → Castle Combe

Why this works

Minimal backtracking • Natural north–south progression • Villages, rivers and landscapes unfold gradually
Best for 3–5 nights

Two bases

The most efficient way to explore both halves of the Cotswolds.

Base 1

Broadway or Bourton-on-the-Water
Covers: Chipping Campden, Snowshill, North Cotswolds villages and Hidden Valleys loop

Base 2

Cirencester or Tetbury
Covers: Bibury, southern spine, Roman & Lakes loop and access to Castle Combe
Best for 4–7 nights

Three bases

Add a central stay for maximum flexibility across the loops.

Suggested split

Broadway + Bourton-on-the-Water + Cirencester/Tetbury

Why this works

Easy loop access • Balanced driving • Mix of iconic villages and quieter areas • Ideal pacing
Most relaxed

One base

Perfect for shorter stays or slower travel.

Best location

Bourton-on-the-Water or Cirencester

Why this works

Central location • Easy access to multiple loops • Less packing and moving • Ideal for 1–3 day trips

Campervans & Motorhomes

The Cotswolds are well suited to campervan and motorhome travel, with shorter distances and a wide choice of campsites and stopovers.

However, many villages have narrow streets, limited parking and restrictions in central areas. It’s often best to stay just outside villages and explore on foot.

Popular areas such as Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury and Castle Combe can become very busy — arriving early or later in the day makes a noticeable difference.

Using designated campsites and planning parking in advance helps keep the experience relaxed and enjoyable.
