Kent Coast Road Trip
Bases for Overnight Stays – Where to Stay & How to Shape Your Trip
This road trip follows roughly 110 miles of coastline from Canterbury to Dungeness, curving around the Isle of Thanet before turning south past the White Cliffs and along the Channel. Unlike the Yorkshire Dales, distances are shorter and roads are generally straightforward — but choosing the right base can still improve the rhythm of your trip.
Kent’s coast works in clusters. Thanet is compact. The Cinque Ports sit close together. Canterbury is slightly inland. Staying in the right place reduces backtracking and allows you to enjoy evenings by the sea rather than driving across the county at dusk.
Below are practical base options depending on how long you’re staying and how you want the trip to feel.
If You Want One Base Only
Canterbury – The Most Balanced All-Round Base
Best for: 3–5 night stays covering the full route
Central position between Whitstable and Dover
Strong evening atmosphere, restaurants and accommodation range
Easy access to both Thanet and the White Cliffs
Rail connections if combining with London
Canterbury works particularly well if you want one stable base. It sits just inland but within 30–45 minutes of most coastal highlights. You’ll have slightly longer drives to Dungeness or Margate, but they remain manageable and the trade-off is excellent facilities and atmosphere.
If You Want Classic Seaside Energy
Broadstairs or Margate (Thanet Base)
Best for: 2–4 night stays focused on beaches and cliff walks
Immediate access to Viking Bay and Botany Bay
Easy walking between coastal highlights
Lively seaside character with restaurants and galleries
Short drives within the Thanet Peninsula
This works well if your priority is sandy bays, clifftop paths and a traditional seaside feel. You’ll drive further south for Dover or Dungeness, but the compact nature of Thanet keeps daily mileage light.
If You Want Castles & Cinque Ports Character
Deal or Sandwich
Best for: 2–4 night stays focused on historic coastal towns
Walking access to Deal Castle and seafront
Strong medieval atmosphere in Sandwich
Easy reach of Dover and the White Cliffs
Quieter evenings, less resort-style bustle
This base suits travellers drawn to Tudor fortifications, maritime history and smaller-scale coastal towns. You sacrifice proximity to Whitstable or Margate, but gain depth in Kent’s defensive and Cinque Ports heritage.
If You Want White Cliffs & Harbour Revival
Dover or Folkestone
Best for: 1–3 night stays centred on cliffs and Channel views
Direct access to the White Cliffs
Close to Dover Castle and South Foreland
Folkestone Harbour Arm for evening dining
Quick links to Deal and Sandwich
This is ideal if the White Cliffs are your priority. Dover provides immediate access to cliff walks, while Folkestone offers a slightly more relaxed, creative atmosphere for evenings.
If You Want the Wild Finale
Dungeness or Rye Area
Best for: 1–2 quieter nights at the edge of the route
Immediate access to Dungeness landscape
Dramatic open skies and shingle shoreline
Slower pace, fewer crowds
Ideal as a reflective final stop
Dungeness feels remote compared with the rest of the coast. Staying nearby allows you to experience it properly — particularly at sunrise or sunset — rather than rushing in and out.
If You Want to Split Your Stay
4–5 Nights
Option 1:
2 nights in Canterbury (heritage + Whitstable)
2–3 nights in Broadstairs or Deal (Thanet or Cinque Ports focus)
This keeps the route flowing east, then south, without repeated inland returns.
6–7+ Nights
Option 2:
2 nights in Canterbury
2 nights in Thanet (Broadstairs or Margate)
2–3 nights in Deal, Dover or Dungeness
This approach allows each stretch of coast to feel distinct and reduces cross-county driving.
How the Bases Work with the Sections
Canterbury & Whitstable work best from Canterbury or Whitstable.
Thanet Cliffs, Viking Bay & Botany Bay work best from Broadstairs or Margate.
White Cliffs, Castles & the Cinque Ports work best from Deal, Dover or Folkestone.
Dungeness works best as a final overnight rather than a day-return.
Because Kent’s coastline curves rather than runs straight, choosing the right base shapes your evenings and keeps the journey feeling progressive rather than circular. The distances are manageable — but thoughtful positioning makes the trip smoother and more relaxed.

A collection of aires, pub stops, venues, car parks, park-up spots, and viewpoints, for those in campervans or motorhomes. Sorry, caravans are not permitted.
Secret Stays® are mostly spaces to park overnight, with no, or few facilities, where ‘camping behaviour’ is not permitted. This means you can rock up in your van but not get out awnings, chairs, etc - if you want this - book a campsite. Consider a campsite every few days, for facilities such as freshwater, waste disposal, etc.
Secret Stays® can be free but also can have a fee paid for parking, an entry ticket, or a purchase such as a meal, it's a fantastic way to support a business and stay somewhere different and probably off-the-beaten-track! Overnight stays provided correspond with the regional routes featured.
Please always respect the venue and be considerate as stopovers can be refused at any time. It's usually polite to telephone ahead and check and is often a requirement, especially as places can change seasonally. Never litter or empty waste without permission or unless there is a designated disposal at a stopover.
