Discover one of England’s most richly layered road trips — a beautifully curated route that takes you from the soaring ridgelines of the Malvern Hills through gentle river valleys, historic market towns, and some of the most photogenic villages in the country.
From hill walks and literary heritage to half-timbered villages, cider country and cathedral cities, this journey blends natural beauty with cultural depth — offering a flexible route across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.
How the Journey Works
This route is built around two core journeys and a collection of themed experiences:
Malvern Hills & The Vale – A scenic introduction combining hill walks, riverside towns and the northern edge of the Cotswolds.
Black & White Trail – A slower, more rural section through Herefordshire’s famous timber-framed villages and quiet countryside lanes.
Themed Trails – Optional routes and ideas including Civil War history, blossom trails, cider country and seasonal highlights.

How to Get There
This road trip begins around Great Malvern, at the foot of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire. Positioned between the Cotswolds, Welsh Borders and the Severn Valley, it forms a natural gateway into some of England’s quieter countryside routes.
One of the strengths of the region is how accessible it feels while still offering scenic landscapes, historic market towns, black-and-white villages, cider country and winding rural roads. Birmingham, Bristol, Oxford and Cardiff all sit within relatively easy reach, making the area ideal for shorter breaks and longer touring routes alike.
The route works particularly well when explored by car, allowing flexibility to stop at smaller villages, countryside pubs, viewpoints and heritage sites spread across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
