When to Travel & How Long to Take

The Malvern Hills, Vale of Evesham and Herefordshire’s Black & White villages offer a changing landscape of hills, orchards, rivers and historic towns. The experience shifts with the seasons — from blossom-filled countryside to harvest colours and quieter winter roads.

The route is made up of two complementary sections: Malvern Hills & The Vale (68 miles • ~2h 30m) and The Black & White Trail (75 miles • ~2h 45m).

While total driving time is relatively short, this is a journey best taken slowly — with time for walks, market towns, heritage sites and scenic detours.

Best Time For…

Walking & Views April – October
Blossom & Orchards March – May
Historic Towns & Villages Year-round
Autumn Colour & Cider Season September – October

Spring (March–May)

Best for: Blossom, fresh landscapes, walking

One of the most distinctive times to visit. Orchards across the Vale burst into blossom, the Malvern Hills are clear and green, and walking conditions are ideal before peak crowds.

Summer (June–August)

Best for: Long days, events, open attractions

The busiest and most vibrant period. Towns like Broadway and Ledbury are lively, and hilltop views stretch for miles. Early starts help avoid the busiest spots.

Autumn (September–October)

Best for: Colour, harvest season, quieter travel

A standout time for this route. Woodland and orchard colours deepen, cider season begins, and the pace slows — making it ideal for scenic drives and photography.

Winter (November–February)

Best for: Atmosphere, quiet roads, heritage

A quieter, more reflective time. Villages feel peaceful, views from the hills are often clearer, and historic towns can be explored without crowds.

How Long Do You Need?

Combined driving time is around 5 hours 15 minutes, but this only reflects time on the road. The experience lies in the stops — villages, walks, viewpoints and heritage sites.

Absolute minimum: 2–3 days (one section or highlights)

Recommended: 3–5 days

Comfortable pace: 5–7 days

With time to explore fully: 7–10+ days

Many trips work best by splitting time between the two areas — Malvern / Vale of Evesham and Herefordshire villages.

A Note on Pace

This is not a distance-driven route. The best parts sit just beyond the road — hilltop paths, quiet villages, orchards and riverside walks.

A good rhythm is 2–3 hours of driving per day, leaving time to explore properly.

Slowing down transforms the journey from a series of stops into a connected experience of landscape, history and place.
